The Sculpture Garden at the Ellerslie Flower Show

One of the highlights for me, and the part of the show I found myself wandering around at the end of most days was the sculpture garden bordering the lake under the tall pines.   Here are some of the sculptures I particularly loved.

Ecoshere- Sharon Earle

Ecoshere by Sharon Earle

My favourite sculpture.   A perfect metal sphere made of intertwined leaves and fern fronds.  A door opened to let you inside to sit on a metal bench seat and peer out through the metal greenery.

Three Trees - John van Beek

There were 3 of these barbed wire trees lined up on the edge of the lake.   Beautiful silouhettey low maintenance topiary but not a patch on Mother Natures sculpture.

Rhino - Chris Meader

Massive scrap metal rhino goes wild in Hagley Park.   This looked so real it could have walked away.   Weighed a ton or three - how did they move it there?

Flora the Cow

Wire again I know but this one was so clever - a cow was made of vegetable shaped welded wire.   Such a lovely look on her face you couldn't help but go up and say hello.

The Lady of the Lake

Sorry to the artist, I can't remember what this sculpture was called.  On one or two days I did want to offer her something warm to wear.

Overall what a great setting for these sculptures - heaps of space and the right mix of light, shade and water - they looked amazing.    Even the heads of the manequins in the lake which I couldn't photograph without getting my feet wet.   It was also heartening to see beautiful things made from recycled material.
