Developed in the New England states of Massachusetts and Rhode Island in the early 1900's the breed is known for it's hardiness and disease resistance.
They have lovely rust to chestnut colouring and although they are a large bird the breed became known for it's egg production qualities rather than it's meat.
They are good foragers, do well free ranging and tend to be top of the pecking order.
They are not known to be the most docile breed, so although they're prodigious layers, it might be best to opt for another breed if you're looking for pets for the kids.
