The Barred Rock is a very popular old breed in America. Originally developed in New England and recognised as a distinct breed in 1874 it was created by crossing Dominiques and Black Javas.
It is a reliable layer of light brown eggs, winter and summer. They are not great flyers so do not require high fencing. They do appreciate some space though and are a hardy, vigourous, long lived bird.
It is a dual purpose breed with hens weighing 6lbs. They make a beautiful roasting fowl with their yellow skin and full breast. A popular bird for American fried chicken.
